Name Badges

Please always wear your name badge for easier entrance to the campus, meeting rooms and social events.

Campus Entry / Gates

There are three entry points to METU campus.

  • A1 Gate is located on Eskişehir Yolu.
  • A4 Gate is located near Yüzüncü Yıl and it is the gate you will use when going to the Hotel.
  • A7 Gate is located on Bilkent road.

For problem-free entry to the campus you should give your name to the security personnel, also mentioning that you are a participant of EUROsimA, so that they can check for your name in the list we will provide them.

Internet Access

Internet access in the campus area is only available for METU students and students of the universities who are a part of Eduroam network. If your university is a part of the Eduroam network, please consult your own university’s IT department for your Eduroam settings. Connection settings are different for each university, so we cannot help if you don’t know your own university’s parameters.

EUROsimA team will try to provide an openly accessible internet connection during the conference although it may not be possible due to internet access policy of the Middle East Technical University. IT department will inform the participants before or during the conference if such an option becomes available.

Participants who have a Turkish sim card are advised to bring the necessary equipment so that they can use their 3G connection on their computers. (Personal hotspot app, USB modem, etc.)

Electric Supply

The electric current is 220 Volts / 50 Hz AC with European type connections.

Currency

In Turkey currency is the Turkish Lira (₺).

Approximate value of the Turkish Lira is as follows. Please refer to the website of Central Bank of Turkey to most up-to-date exchange rate.

Time Zone

(GMT + 3) due to Turkish summer time.

Communication

Türk Telekom is the major landline telecom service provider. Turkey has 3 GSM operators (Turkcell, Vodafone, Avea). Please consult your local GSM operator to find out if they have roaming agreement with Turkish Operators.

The international phone code for Turkey is +90 The phone code for Ankara is +90312.

Banks and Exchange

Most Turkish Banks change traveller’s cheques as well as cash. The best place to change cash is the exchange offices. They give better exchange rates than banks. Rates of exchange is better in Turkey than outside the country, so it is better to change a minimal amount of money before traveling to Turkey. Other than banks and exchange offices, some of the “İş Bankası” ATMs provide 24h currency exchange facility with a slight disadvantage in the exchange rate.

Credit and debit cards branded Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted as a payment option. Almost every restaurant, cafe, and most of the shops accept credit and debit cards as a method of payment. You may be asked to provide the PIN code for your card, or provide an ID and signature for identification.

Banking hours are Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 12.00 hrs and 13.30 to 17.00 hrs. Most exchange offices are open from Monday to Saturday from 09.00 – 20.00 hrs.

Passport / Visa

Turkey is an EU candidate state. EU citizens can obtain multiple entry visas at the Turkish border gates, for non-EU citizens please contact the nearest Turkish Embassy. Visa is needed for citizens of nearly for all countries. Most of the visitors can get a short term visa in 10 minutes using the e-Visa website. For more information please visit e-Visa web site. Those who need an official invitation in order to obtain a visa for entering Turkey, contact us as soon as possible!

Customs

Visitors may bring an unlimited amount of Turkish or foreign currency with them into Turkey, but they may take out of the country only $5000 or other currencies in cash equal to this amount. There are no restrictions on the transfer of Turkish or foreign money to other countries through banks. Jewellery made of precious stones or metals that is not valued at more than $15000 and is not intended for commercial uses may be brought in and out of the country.

Personal Insurance & Emergency

Personal insurance and accident insurance are recommended to all participants during their stay in Turkey. The organizers will not accept any responsibility in this respect but assistance will be provided in urgent cases. In case of illness or accident, contact the hotel reception or the information desk at the Conference Venue. There is a basic medical center in METU Campus.
